The 4 Nations Face-Off was a runaway success for the NHL in lieu of an All-Star Game this week. Of course, it helps that the league got it’s preferred championship matchup in Canada vs. United States.
After a blockbuster first match-up featured three fights in the first nine seconds, a rematch with the title on the line was sure to have much more intensity than you’d expect from an exhibition — especially in an inaugural tournament. That’s just what we’ve come to expect from this rivalry.
Naturally, the game went to overtime. Despite the Americans dominating puck possession for most of the extra frame, Connor McDavid ended things with the game-winning goal from the slot eight minutes into OT.
