How points are awarded:
– 3 points for the team winning in regulation
– 1 point for both teams if they’re tied after regulation
– An additional point for the team winning the game in a 5-minute 3-on-3 OT, or in a shootout
How teams are ranked after the preliminary round:
After the preliminary round, all teams will be ranked 1 through 12. To determine the ranking, the following criteria will be used:
1) Position in the group
2) Number of points
3) Goal differential
4) Number of goals scored for
5) IIHF World Ranking
After the preliminary round, teams 1-4 get a bye into the quarter-Finals and have home ice for their quarter-final matchup. Teams 5 – 12 will play in qualification playoff games, paired as 5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, and 8 vs. 9.
The four winning teams of the qualification playoff games will advance to the quarter-finals, paired as 1 vs. winner of 8 vs. 9, 2 vs. winner of 7 vs. 10, 3 vs. winner of 6 vs. 11 and 4 vs. winner of 5 vs. 12.
The semi-final games have the highest-seeded semi-finalist playing the lowest-seeded semi-finalist according to the combined preliminary-round ranking (1 to 12) for the first game. The second-highest seeded semi-finalist will play the third-highest seeded semi-finalist in the second semi-final game.
